Duration:

one week

Day 1 SATURDAY
  • arrival in the afternoon at farm holiday location in the province of Grosseto
  • welcome drinks
  • assignment of rooms or apartments
  • dinner on the farm
  • presentation of weekly programme with slide show (only for groups) and 
    distribution of information leaflets and pamphlets
  • overnight stay

Day 2 SUNDAY 

  • breakfast on the farm
  • transfer to visit to the small town of Poggi del Sasso, a small rural village and “capital” of Montecucco wine.This is the most densely-planted area of vineyards, with the highest number of wineries and wine-producing estates and of added interest for its beautiful castles, including the most famous at Colle Massari, a fortified farming estate with buildings set around a central courtyard situated near Cinigiano. The castle can be visited from the outside.
  • visit to a winery with wine-tasting at Montecucco, which lends its name to the D.O.C. denomination; this is the very heart of wine-producing land in front of Mount Amiata.
  • free for lunch
  • visit to Porrona castle a delightful hamlet and the central feature of the D.O.C. Montecucco marketing image. Still enclosed by its original walls it retains the charm of the castle it once was, built around the 16th century.
  • transfer to Seggiano, one of the oldest towns of the mountain region and another area famous both for its wine and olive oil. Visit to the Logge del Mercato and the characteristic town centre scattered with cellars dug into the rock. Another important feature of this area is the singular modern art garden created by Daniel Spoerri, a wonderful example of contemporary creative art set in a natural environment of rare beauty on the slopes of Mount Amiata. 
  • dinner at the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay 

Day 3 MONDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • morning spent visiting the area outside the Castle of Monte Antico (a visit inside can be arranged on request), built in the 13th century; the outside of the 12th century castle of Casenovole near Casal di Pari and Casal di Pari itself where parts of the original medieval town walls remain: true rural gems 
  • free for lunch
  • visit to Civitella Marittima whose town centre is the object of the whole tour which concentrates on D.O.C. Monteregio di Massa Marittima. The tour continues with a visit to the magnificent Badia Ardenghesca, an ancient monastery situated on the “salt road”
  • transfer to Paganico, the old customs station, from which its name is derived, situated on the “salt road” between Siena and Grosseto, a typical example of a medieval fortress, now a busy and modern centre, featuring interesting city walls and four gateways dating from the 4th century
  • dinner on farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 4 TUESDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • visit to the Museo Archeologico e d’Arte of the Maremma in Grosseto , one of the most exhaustive and most famous in Tuscany, whose numerous archaeological exhibits illustrate the origins of Grosseto and its outlying territories
  • guests can continue their visit to Grosseto and its monuments (the Medicean walls, the Duomo and the Church of San Francesco) and perhaps do some shopping in the town centre. 
  • free for lunch
  • transfer to Roselle, situated on a hill 9 km from Grosseto, and deemed by experts to have been one of the most important cities of Northern Etruria, for a visit to the archaeological excavations.
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 5 WEDNESDAY

  • breakfast on the farm 
  • transfer to Sticciano, a charming little town perched on a hill in the local district of Roccastrada.
  • visit to the town of Roccastrada from which guests can admire the spectacular view and a visit to the Abbey of Giugnano at Le Casecce, dedicated to San Salvatore, whose ruins include only the remains of the crypt and the Cistercian building.
  • free for lunch
  • free afternoon (we recommend a visit to the following towns: Sassofortino, Roccatederighi, Montemassi, Massa Marittima)
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 6 THURSDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • visit to the village of Castiglioncello Bandini dominated by its magnificent castle. A visit to the castle’s wine cellars is strongly recommended, currently under restoration. 
  • departure for Vallerona, a compact rural settlement with short stop at Stribugliano with a truly panoramic setting.
  • visit to oil mill and oil-tasting in Vallerona
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon a visit to Cana, small country village of Etruscan origin and one of the largest D.O.C. Montecucco growing areas.
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 7 FRIDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • transfer to Sovana, a unique town which still bears numerous signs of its truly illustrious history.At the entrance to the town visit to the Rocca Aldobrandesca and the Duomo. On the outskirts of the town visit to the Etruscan Necropolis
  • transfer to Sorano to visit this medieval town and explore the fascinating historic and natural environment which makes it one of central Italy’s most famous towns.
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon transfer to Pitigliano, splendid town built on a massive rock of tufa stone, to explore the magical atmosphere of its old streets and the fascinating old Jewish district. Visit to the Museo Civico e Archeologico to admire Etruscan pottery exhibits.
  • dinner at the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Approximately 15 km from the town , near Montorgiali, an interesting visit to the outside of the castle of Monte Po’, an example of a fortified medieval and Renaissance villa which currently belongs to an important wine-producing company.
  • visit to an agritourist estate and wine-tasting

  • visit to the charming medieval town of Magliano in Toscana with wine and oil- tasting
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 7 FRIDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • visit to the town of Capalbio, medieval town and one of the most famous resorts of the whole of the Tuscan Maremma.
  • visit to an agritourist estate and wine-tasting
  • free for lunch
  • transfer to Orbetello, town situated in front of the Argentario massif in the middle of the lagoon at the end of a small peninsula which links it to the mainland enclosed between the Tombolo of the Feniglia and Giannella. Here visitors can admire the Etruscan pediment discovered at Talamonaccio one of the most representative works of Etruscan art known as the Frontone di Talamone
  • visit to the estate “La Parrina” and wine-tasting
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 8 SATURDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • transfer to Pitigliano, splendid town built on a massive rock of tufa stone, to explore the magical atmosphere of its old streets and the fascinating old Jewish district. Visit to the Museo Civico e Archeologico with exhibits of Etruscan pottery.
  • visit to winery and Pitigliano White wine-tasting
  • free for lunch
