Discovering the Maremma: In collaboration with “CON ARTE”

Duration:

one week

Day 1 SATURDAY
  • arrival in the afternoon at farm holiday location in the province of Grosseto
  • welcome drinks
  • assignment of rooms or apartments
  • dinner on the farm
  • presentation of weekly programme with slide show (only for groups) and 
    distribution of information leaflets and brochures 
  • overnight stay

Day 2 SUNDAY 

  • breakfast on the farm
  • visit to the Monte Amiata Wildlife Reserve with nature guide. During this excursion visitors will a chance to observe deer and fallow deer in their natural habitat and learn to recognise various kinds of vegetation, animal tracks and resting places
  • free for lunch
  • transfer to Arcidosso, old mountain holiday resort on the western slopes of Mount Amiata with its Pieve ( parish church) of Santa Maria in Lamulas and a visit to a pottery workshop. The tour then continues with a visit to Castel del Piano, once owned by the Aldobrandeschi family, 14 km from the Amiata mountain top. Here guests will visit a glass-making laboratory and leather clothing factory.
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 3 MONDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • transfer to Castell’Azzara characterised by some beautiful landscape and visit to a pottery workshop.
  • transfer to Sovana, a unique town of ancient origin which still bears numerous signs of its truly illustrious history. At the entrnce to the town visit to the ruins of the Rocca Aldobrandesca and the Duomo.
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon a short visit to Roccalbegna, beautiful medieval town named after the River Albegna whose valley it overlooks. Here we recommend a visit to the Cassero and, above all, to the Pietra. Visit to a pottery workshop. 
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 4 TUESDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • in the morning visit to the famous Maremma Regional Park (we recommend itinerary A2 – LE TORRI, the most characteristic) to admire the uncontaminated natural environment and magnficient scenery. Visitors will also visit a farm and see the traditional the “Butteri Maremmani” (local “cowboys”) in action.
  • free for lunch 
  • in the afternoon transfer to Grosseto and visit to a saddlery to see the experts saddlers at work
  • dinner on farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay 

Day 5 WEDNESDAY

  • breakfast on farm 
  • visit to the Museo Archeologico e d’Arte of the Maremma in Grosseto , one of the most exhaustive and most famous in Tuscany, whose numerous archaeological exhibits illustrate the origins of Grosseto and its outlying territories
  • guests can continue their visit to Grosseto and its monuments (the medicean walls, the Duomo and the church of San Francesco) and perhaps do some shopping in the town centre. Visit to a leather goods factory and carpenter’s workshop.
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon transfer to Roselle, situated on a hill 9 km from Grosseto and deemed by experts to have been one of the most important cities of Northern Etruria, for a visit to the archaeological excavations or, alternatively, free time.
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 6 THURSDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • morning spent visiting the medieval town of Montepescali with numerous examples of religious architecture: the church of San Niccolò, the Church of Saints Lorenzo and Stefano and the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie. Visit to a pottery workshop.
  • the tour continues with a visit to Sticciano, a pretty town perched on a hill in the local district of Roccastrada. Visit to the Church of the Santissimo Sacro Cuore di Gesù and the Church of Santa Caterina, both sadly in disrepair
  • free for lunch
  • free afternoon ( we recommend a visit to Castiglione della Pescaia and Punta Ala)
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 7 FRIDAY

  • breakfast on the farm
  • transfer to Massa Marittima for a walk round this beautiful medieval town. Special attention will be paid to the Cathedral of San Cerbone, dating to the mid-12th century, the most eminent example of religious architecture in the Maremma. Visit to a pottery workshop and a carpentry.
  • free for lunch
  • in the afternoon visit to Le Casecce, in the local district of Roccastrada , and the ruins of the Abbey of Giugnano, dedicated to San Salvatore, which include only the remains of the crypt and the Cistercian building.
  • dinner on the farm or at a typical restaurant and overnight stay

Day 8 SATURDAY

  • breakfast on the farm and departure
